Charity Softball tournament brings smiles

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Sports can bring communities closer, especially when rallying for a common goal.

"Well it's a whole bunch of people pretending to play softball for a good cause," said Fresno State play-by-play announcer Paul Loeffler.

Also known as the Team Smile softball tournament.

"There are so many people in this community that give of themselves so freely," said Loeffler. "Doctor X is one of those guys and he gets the whole dental community together to provide free dental care for kids who otherwise wouldn't have it."

"Each year we have to raise about $16,000 to bring Team Smile here, said Team Smile organizer Xavier J. Gutierrez. "Anything you need in a dental office we bring here to campus."

People came together from various professions to raise money for a softball tournament at Margie Wright Diamond.

"People in the news business and people from Fresno State and everybody coming together for a good cause. When it's all said and done it's going to help out people in the long run that really need it," said ABC 30 news producer Brian Morrow.

Sports bringing a community closer.

"When these dentists and orthodontists come together and reach out and do something for people who otherwise wouldn't have that help, all of us should have that be behind that and I hope this tournament continues to grow," said Loeffler.

One smile at a time.
