FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- After lengthy discussion, the Fresno City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting unlawful camping in city limits.

The final vote was six to one despite warning from American Civil Liberties Union that it is likely illegal. Those who continue to camp will be given the option to either register for social services or go to jail.

Council members say they hope this will force the defiant few to accept treatment. But homeless advocates say this tactic is flawed.

The ordinance will now go into effect later next month.
