Celebrities and a Houston church stepping up to help Harvey's victims get back on their feet

HUSTON, Texas (KFSN) -- They walked in with nothing; they walked out with a new lease on life.

Dennis, a Houston resident, said, "It means a lot to me. I got hygiene, food, water, and torches, you know-- it's a lot to me."

Volunteers at the Bread of Life at St. John bagged up water, toiletries, socks, and everything you can imagine for people in need after the storm and flooding. Pastor Rudy Rasmus said the church has gotten some big financial help to get this operation moving.

"Almost immediately I started getting calls from my friends around the country, and a few of them were A-list celebrities who have Houston in their hearts. Beyonce Knowles reached out to me, said 'I want to help.'"

The Bread of Life is Beyonce's home church and she enlisted help from the likes of Ludacris and Tyler Perry. Their contributions expanded the mission exponentially. They are now expecting to lend a hand to nearly 1,000 families in the next few days.

"For me, this is about love being made visible. It's about giving people dignity in the midst of trying circumstances," said Pastor Melvin Gray, Bread of Life.

This mission is not new to the people here, though. They have cared for homeless people for 25 years, which put them in good position to find immediate housing for about 20 families who spent a week in Downtown Houston evacuation centers.

Now, the mission is only growing with a big XO from some of the world's biggest stars.
