SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Former Fresno State professors Susan Rodriguez and her husband Roy Thornton saw the devastation left behind from the Tubbs Fire.

The intense blaze raged through their neighborhood early Monday morning and destroyed their wine country retirement home.

A home so special, that Rodriguez remembers just how long it took them to get it.

"It took us a year and 23 days to buy this house," said Rodriguez

But now it is gone-- their once hardwood floors, now covered in ash and their home surrounded by downed power lines while memories are burned to pieces.

"Everybody says they are just things as our son said some things are irreplaceable and we just didn't have time to take anything."

"You wake up at night and think damn I'm never going to be able to use that again."

The intense blaze raged through their neighborhood early Monday morning and destroyed their wine country retirement home.

Many neighbors, if not all are faced with that same reality while Rodriguez has tried to remain strong.

The emotions of it all, at times -- are just too much to handle.

"It is hard, yeah but we are really strong and we will power on."
