Fresno Chaffee Zoo is celebrating International Cheetah Day

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A scavenger hunt was held for kids along with prizes.The goal for zookeepers was to send a message across, cheetah conservation.

They say there are less than 6,700 cheetahs left in Africa and most of them could become extinct in the next 20 to 30 years.

"So if we don't conserve cheetahs my kids will never get to see cheetahs your grandkids. So by teaching children here at the zoo about these animals they can really become compassionate and start to care about these animals and know that they're alive somewhere in the world that they may never get to travel but that if we don't do our part they may never make it over there," Zookeeper Shayna from the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.

The zoo has two cheetah's that are part of their breeding program: Trish and Jahzeerie.

Officials say across the U.S. there are less than 150 cheetahs in zoos.
