Thick fog rolls into Central Valley, dropping visibility to quarter mile in some places

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dense fog is setting in across the Central Valley Friday night. With it comes dangerous driving conditions making it even more important to stay alert.

California Highway Patrol tells us that places like Madera are some of the areas that are seeing denser fog sooner and longer.

Across the Central Valley fog is making its presence known. By midnight most towns will be blanketed and around two Saturday morning, visibility is expected to be less than a mile in some places.

California Highway Patrol Spokesman, Victor Taylor says it's important for people to be much more alert when they are driving in the fog, especially on country roads.

"First and foremost if you don't have to go anywhere, don't go anywhere," Talor said. "Coming back to the Fresno area and some of the rural areas like Sanger and coming down from Madera County you see a lot of dense fog."

Many semi drivers like Ed Myers rest and refuel at the Pilot truck stop in Madera County. He's been driving for 14-years and says the fog does not really scare him.

Myers said, "Basically I reduce my speed, and I keep an eye on the vehicles in front of me and increase my following distance."

While the fog may not scare Myers, reckless drivers do -- specifically when they try to pass him. He recommends drivers always pass on the left-hand side.

However, driving slower is not the only thing to remember in the fog.

Taylor says you should give yourself more time to get to your destination and always drive with your headlights on. And since it is hard to see he also recommends we listen.

"If you are in the rural areas coming to a stop sign make sure that you roll down your windows, so you can actually hear the traffic because you won't be able to hear it," Taylor said.
