Valley Focus: Soroptimists of Visalia are women helping women

Soroptimist. It's a word many of us have heard of but what does it mean? In Latin, it means "best for women." That's the mission behind the Soroptimist Club.

Soroptimist International of Visalia was established in 1939 with a mission of improving the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

Jody Gilman is head of programs for Soroptimist International of Visalia. She sat down with Valley Focus host Margot Kim to talk about the club's work and upcoming fundraisers.

Gelman has been a member for 25 years. She says projects supported by the club include Live Your Dream. The education grant program helps women who are returning to school or taking part in training that will help improve their lives.

Often these women are overcoming obstacles such as poverty, domestic abuse, and substance abuse. Grants help women with necessities like transportation, child care, and household expenses.

The Soroptimists will be holding a Ruby Awards Dinner Tuesday, February 6 at 6 p.m. at the Visalia Convention Center.

They recognize Live Your Dream recipients who share their stories to inspire others. The group's major fundraiser, Spring Fling will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the Wyndham Hotel in Visalia.
