Bears aiming for 3rd straight State championship

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Success does not happen overnight.

"I think we just had some successful girls, individuals. It just built on from there," said Selma wrestling co-head coach Joey Areyano.

Into a powerhouse girls wrestling program at Selma High.

"We're not treated as girls. Nobody takes it easy on us, that's why were are so tough," said wrestler Gracie Figueroa.

Practice has made perfect for Selma Bears program that has blossomed, especially over the last five years.

"Just keep practicing hard and trying my best, just don't stop coming to practice," said wrestler Alleida Martinez.

Selma has won three straight girls wrestling Valley titles and are also the two-time defending state champions.

"I have a lot of fun. In the match it might not seem like it, I smile and everything. But as soon as I hit the mat, game mode," said Figueroa.

"It's going to teach them a lot of discipline and how to respect themselves and respect others and to be humble. Whether you are winning or losing but whatever you do, just be your best at it," said Areyano.
