SE Fresno apartment fire displaces more than 30
More than 30 people are left without a home after a fire in a Southeast Fresno apartment complex on Friday.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- More than 30 people are left without a home after a fire in a Southeast Fresno apartment complex on Friday.

The Fresno Fire Department says it started on the second floor of a complex on Montecito and Alta just after 3 p.m. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to ventilate the building and finally put out the fire.

Three units were damaged by the flames, and several others likely have heavy smoke damage.

The fire started in the center of the building, which firefighters say is the worst part, making it easier for flames to spread to other units.

"When the first units arrived they quickly evacuated the apartment from victims and attacked the fire, preventing it from spreading north and south," said Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo with the Fresno Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Additional crews were called in to help so firefighters could rotate their work during Friday's high temperatures.
