Kearney Park in Fresno closes for the next few weeks

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno County crews are hard at work removing dead trees from Kearney Park. More than 100 trees were impacted by the drought--leaving them dry, brittle and dangerous and now they need to be removed.

"We had a long period of drought, it dried out a lot of trees and it just made them hazardous," said Fresno County PIO Jordan Scott.

Other parks were also devastated by the drought and also need maintenance.

While the county works on cleaning its parks they are asking the public to be patient.

"While we are working on this park there are a lot of other parks in Fresno County that are just as enjoyable. We encourage them to go if they want to get out, there are a lot of places to enjoy," said Scott.

After they are done removing the trees the next step is to plant in new ones and to do that the county is applying for a grant.

"We are going to take away these trees and leave an empty space. We are working with a lot of partner organizations and doing what we can to reforest the park," said Scott.

The park is expected to open back on February the 28th but that could change.
