Girl Scout members adopting new business approach to boost sales

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- There is nothing like Girl Scout cookies, just ask Makaylah Johnson who is on a mission to get Thin Mints and Lemonades in your hand.

"Just how you sell them and describe them to people get them to buy more. When you see them and have a smile on your face and they say I'll buy some cookies from you," said Makaylah.

She is trying to sell 1,000 boxes of cookies this season. It is a high goal, but she is already getting help from the Girl Scouts.

The organization has changed their business philosophy this cookie season.

"We're really in the age of instant gratification. People do not want to sit and wait for their Thin Mints to arrive in town, they really want to order them and have them within two seconds," said Director of Marketing and Communications Jordan King.

Once girl scouts got the cookies they could sell them right away to customers with no wait time like the old days. Selling early meant big sales on Super Bowl Sunday

Girl Scouts are using technology more than ever to sell their sweet treats. Buyers can use the cookie finder app to find out where the closest Lemonades or Carmel de Lites are. Girl Scouts are using email to reach customers near and far.

"They're able to create pages where they're able to email grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle on the East Coast or Midwest or wherever they might be and they can still support their girl scouts in Fresno, California," said King.

King said girls are using social media and websites to sell to reach their goal. She says cookie season is teaching lifelong lessons.

"They're learning to thank their customers via email, hand out pitches to new customers via email. They're really learning strategies that as a business owner today you have to have during high school, middle school, elementary school," said King.

As for Makaylah, she knows her next sale is only a pitch away.

"They only come out once a year and they're delicious," said Makaylah

Cookies are only available until March 18th.
