UCPCC unveils its 2nd location with a focus on improving senior living

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The United Cerebral Palsy Central California officially opened its second location Thursday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in northwest Fresno called the Nest.

A place where adults with disabilities can come to interact and improve their quality of life while in a home-like atmosphere.

"It was a huge need. What's happening is people with disabilities are growing older. People are slowing down maybe people are stopped working. They want to have an opportunity to do something a little different than what other programs in the community provide," said UCPCC Executive Director Roger Slingermin.

It has been a two-year process to make the Nest a reality. The new facility offers individuals everything from daily group art projects to the use of computers and even time spent outdoors in the garden.

"There are some students here who like to read. Some students that like to watch the TV. Some that just like to sit back and relax. We offer more of a senior living than what you'd see at another adult day program," said Slingermin.

Officials say Thursday's grand opening is bigger than just a new facility. They say the Nest fills a void in the community and stretches beyond just helping folks with cerebral palsy.

"It's unique in our Central Valley. There's no other program like it and that dream allows them to still interact with one another at a slower pace at something they are able to grasp," UCPCC Board Member Vony Sturgeon.

The Nest currently helps 22 students with a capacity to welcome dozens more in the future.
