Authorities arrest burglar after standoff just outside Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A convicted felon breaks into a home and leads police on a scary 2-hour standoff for neighbors.

Chanly Un, 37, created a bizarre and frightening scene for neighbors on in southwest Fresno Saturday.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says he led them on 2-hour standoff inside a home he broke into at Jensen and Rolinda Avenues.

It wasn't his first break in of the day, though, deputies say he burglarized another home next door where contractors inside were working.

When deputies and the homeowners arrived that it became it apparent of what the suspect was prepared to do.

"We had the homeowner go up with the key and was about to open the door to go up inside and at that time the locked flipped and they knew they had some resistance on the other, and the suspect said 'I'll shoot you'" Tony Botti with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies then released tear gas in hopes of getting Un to walk out.

"At that point the suspect picked up the phone to talk to us he was still resistant he said, 'Don't come in here. I'll shoot and kill you. I'm not ready to give up,'" Botti explained.

To determine exactly which room Un was in, authorities took out the robotic cameras.

"Since we had that visual we targets our efforts to that room we deployed more tear gas inside and he chose to get up," Botti said.

Un, a convicted felon who was released on AB109, was then arrested.

Vicki Rambo lives right down the street and was relieved to find out he was taken into custody.

She spoke with us behind what she says protects her from people like him.

"Put up a fence, get a camera," she said. "We have a security camera. We have a dog. It's a rural area, I'm sorry that the road is like this now but you just need to do."
