Be mindful of where you leave your keys, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As the holidays approach, Fresno Police are warning everyone to be mindful of where you leave your keys. Officers say Valley residents are making it too easy for thieves.

Lieutenant Donald Gross said, "Honda's seem to be the most stolen vehicle."

Gross presented to the city's top brass during the department's monthly Crime View meeting, which offers each jurisdiction the opportunity to discuss crime trends in their respective areas.

Gross commands the North East division and said, "Our students are the most prime targets for things being taken out of vehicles, unfortunately our students also leave the most things in their vehicles."

The district, which encompasses Fresno State, has been hit with thieves. Cars are being stolen, and of all things, motorized wheelchairs have disappeared from city streets.

Gross says the victims have been victimized because they've left the keys in the ignition which makes them easy targets.

"Early morning warm ups people not being cognizant about where they're leaving their keys," explained Gross.

9 cars were stolen all with the keys inside, and with the holidays fast approaching, police are worried about what else you might leave in your car.

Gross added, "Awareness by people to not leave things in their vehicles, not come out of the shopping centers arms loaded."

That winter warning also serves to remind people to be leery of "warming" up your car before you head out, and always take your keys with you.
