Shooting kills one person south of Dos Palos

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno County Sheriff's Department is investigating a homicide south of Dos Palos and west of Firebaugh.

The body of 33-year-old Hugo Gonzalez Vargas was discovered with gunshot wounds near Russell Avenue and Main Street overnight when Cal Fire personnel responded to a medical call. The Sheriff's office says a closer examination revealed the man had been shot and later died at the scene shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Investigators say they are searching the area with a helicopter and a K-9 unit. They are also interviewing neighbors and family members, but so far, they are not saying if they have a suspect, or what led to the shooting. They say the property where the shooting occurred is a large ranch and will take an extensive amount of time to investigate.

No arrests have been made in the case.
