Coming together to change a SW Fresno neighborhood

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's a slow and steady process, but some teenagers are working inch by inch to prep and paint a home in Southwest Fresno.

The homeowner, Alicia Chezick, says their free help is a blessing.

"It means that my house is getting pretty," explained Chezick. "Not only my house, but the entire neighborhood is getting a little attention and I think it's great."

More than 150 World Changers are in Fresno this week and they're taking this Southwest Fresno neighborhood under their wings. The volunteers range in age from 13 on up and they have a mission of service.

"They want a way they can make a difference," said Doug Forsythe. "This is a way that they can find that. They want to be able to help people in a community. Some of them, this is their first time doing it."

The teens are doing a range or projects on homes, community centers and even a local business.

The Habitat for Humanity Fresno County Executive Director Tony Miranda said, "Especially partnering with the residents to hear their dream and visions. And then when we come out here and see 150 youth from all over the country working together to support the families. It's an awesome feeling."

World Changers, Habitat for Humanity and Lowe's all teamed up for the project. Lowe's awarded the group a $50,000 grant to help "Rock the Block."

Lowe's Clovis Store Manager John Metcalf said, "It's important to rebuild the community and make things better."

Advocates say the service is also impacting the neighborhood in a big way.

Miranda said, "That is not only good for this family, but the ripple affect, we believe, is really important. That family is going to be encouraged and excited and want to continue to make an investment in their community, so they invest in others."

From planting to painting, the World Changers will be here on site on every day. On Friday, they'll have the big Rock the Block reveal.
