Convenience store clerk shot during Fresno County robbery
According to the victim, they shot him in the chest and stomach because he was not getting the cash out of the register drawer quickly.

FRESNO COUNTY (KFSN) -- An armed robbery in Fresno County has one man recovering from gunshot wounds.

The shooting happened at a convenience store on Shields and Blythe Avenues at around 7 p.m. when two masked men entered the store and demanded money from the clerk inside.

According to the victim, they shot him in the chest and stomach because he was not getting the cash out of the register drawer quickly. He was taken to the hospital where he is expected to recover.

"The cash register is still in there the money is still there I think after they ended up shooting the clerk they took off," Sgt. Quinton Hawkins with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

Renee Martinez lives across the street from the store. He knows the victim and says has worked here for about three years. Martinez even said the clerk rides his bicycle to work every day.

"Every time I go in there say, 'Hi,' he said. "He's always polite to everybody, very nice man, it's just a shame that this is the outcome of what comes about."

As the rain hit the ground, family and friends of the victim stood outside and waited to learn more about why two men shot the man who usually works Sunday nights alone.

The owner of the store was also out here. From what we've been told investigators are looking at surveillance camera footage to get better descriptions of the two suspects and also learn how they got away.
