Derek Carr smiles at contract extension signing

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KFSN) -- (PRESS RELEASE) The Oakland Raiders have signed QB Derek Carr to a five-year contract extension through 2022, the club announced Friday.

The Raiders originally drafted Carr in the second round (36th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has emerged into one of the league's top quarterbacks over his first three seasons, earning two Pro Bowl selections and numerous other individual accolades. He started the first 47 games of his career, throwing for 11,194 yards on 1,055-of-1,732 passing (60.9 percent) with 81 touchdowns and just 31 interceptions.

After earning the starting job out of training camp in his rookie year of 2014, Carr's success over his first three seasons ranks among the great career starts by a quarterback in NFL history. He is one of only eight quarterbacks in league history to start their first 47 games, and ranks second in completions (1,055), third in attempts (1,732), eighth in passing yards (11,194) and fourth in touchdown passes (81) by a player in the first three seasons of their career.

As a rookie, Carr posted one of the most prolific rookie seasons in NFL history, becoming the first Raiders quarterback to start all 16 games. On his way to earning a spot on Sports Illustrated's All-Rookie Team and setting franchise rookie records in every major passing category, Carr finished the season ranked second all-time in completions (348) and sixth in touchdown passes (21) by a rookie.

Carr earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl in 2015, helping the Raiders to a four-win improvement from 2014. He started all 16 games for the second consecutive year and finished with 3,987 passing yards on 350-of-573 passing with 32 passing touchdowns. His 32 passing touchdowns are second most in franchise history, trailing only Daryle Lamonica's 34 in 1969. He also finished the year with the third most passing yards in a season in franchise history and became one of three Raiders to complete 350 passes in a season.

In 2016, Carr led the Raiders to a 12-4 record as the team earned its first trip to the postseason since 2002. He was selected to his second consecutive Pro Bowl after recording a 96.7 passer rating in 15 games, and threw for 3,937 yards with 28 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He finished second in the NFL last year with seven fourth-quarter comebacks and set the NFL record with five game-winning touchdown passes in either the fourth quarter or overtime. Among the individual accolades won during the year, Carr was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week in the team's Week 8 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he set a single-game franchise record by throwing for 513 yards. He was also named the NFL's Castrol Edge Clutch Performer of the Year.

Carr's impact extends beyond the field, as he was voted by his teammates as the recipient of the franchise's prestigious Commitment to Excellence Award in 2016, given to the Raider who best exemplifies hard work, leadership and excellence throughout the season. He was also the team?s nominee for the NFL?s Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award in 2016, presented each year to the NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents and integrity in competition.
