DINUBA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dinuba police say they are working long hours investigating a crime in which two teens were arrested earlier this week. But, they were set free after the Tulare County District Attorney's Office requested more information.

Elijah Villareal died Sunday. Police say he was playing football when he was struck by a 17-year-old driving a van. Witnesses said the driver dragged the 9-year-old for several blocks.

Family members and friends are frustrated the suspects were released, but they want a solid case that ends in long prison terms.

Purple and green ribbons were wrapped around street sign posts Friday to honor Elijah Villareal. Loved ones hung his favorite colors on every sign along the route neighbors say the suspects took as they tried to get away.

A memorial continues to grow at the place Eli's body was finally dislodged from the car, come devastated yet comforted by Eli's deep faith at the spot his life ended.

"He loved Jesus and he told everybody," said Florence Tuttle. "And he would try to pray with everybody and he would ask do they pray, I should ask them if they will pray, maybe they will pray with me, and that is such an amazing thing."

Friday, detectives canvassed the neighborhood, taking pictures and knocking on doors. The police chief also met with Eli's parents Thursday night to let them know, he wants the suspects back behind bars too.

"It was heartbreaking," said Dinuba Police Chief Devon Popovich. "There are no words that I can say to them to ease their pain. We will follow and be thorough on every lead that we get and all the evidence we collect."

Even though Eli is gone, his mother is spending every moment she can with her son, until he is laid to rest.

Tuttle explained, "Just sitting with him for as long as she can, with his body."

The chief says he understands the families' frustration. But, he also wants the crime investigated so the appropriate charges will be pursued and ultimately will hold up in court.

"I want them to know that I take this crime very seriously," said Dinuba Police Chief. "I consider it a crime and I have my men and women working around the clock on it."

Funeral services for Eli are planned for 11 am Monday at the Immanuel Chapel in Reedley.

In honor of the fourth grader, all classes at Immanuel schools from kindergarten up to 12th grade have been cancelled on Monday.
