FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The ongoing drought has some state leaders calling for a drastic change to a symbolic piece of California history.

Groundwater advocates have designed a new California flag. They want to replace the state's iconic bear on lush grass with a camel on sand.

The California Water Foundation designed the new flag to emphasize the severe drought and urge lawmakers to pass groundwater pumping regulations.

California currently does not monitor or regulate its groundwater. Proposed legislation would require local agencies to track and regulate groundwater pumping.
