FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Grieving family members are speaking out for the first time about a teenage boy hit and killed on Highway 99.

Andrew Cardona, 13, was killed last week near Goshen. The California Highway Patrol says he stole beer at a nearby gas station with a friend before running across the highway.

Andrew's uncle says he was getting into trouble in the months before he died. However, he says it came as a complete shock that he stole beer and ran into oncoming traffic.

"If you judge Andrew by the last few minutes of his life then yeah, but if you judge Andrew by the last thirteen years of his life, he was a good kid," said Jim Garcia, Uncle.

Witnesses say they saw the teen running with Andrew look back and then run away. The 16-year-old hasn't been identified or charged with any crime.
