FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno mother, desperate for answers, is pleading for help finding the driver who ran over and killed her son.
Investigators say they have no leads in this case. The 8-year-old boy was run over in Southeast Fresno last Sunday night. The driver didn't stop, and the boy's mother is begging for their arrest.
A few photos are all the Membrano family has left of little Jovany. He was killed last Sunday after being struck by a car -- days before his ninth birthday.
"I would like the public to help us get the person responsible for running over my son," Carla Membrano, Jovany's mother, told Action News in Spanish.
Membrano and her other son crossed the street safely last Sunday on Kings Canyon Road ahead of Jovany and her boyfriend. But when they made it to the center island, Jovany ran into the street and was struck. Police say the driver likely wasn't at fault but now faces felony charges for leaving the scene.
"So he can pay for what he did. They didn't have to leave, they could have stayed to see who they hit, but no they just hit him and left," said Membrano.
The family had just left the Sunlite Market, attempting to cross Kings Canyon in a spot many cross illegally. The area is about 1/8 of a mile from a marked crosswalk.
At their apartment complex nearby, Membrano says her family and Jovany's friends miss him a lot.
"We are all really sad because we aren't going to see my son ever again," said Membrano.
As for the driver, again who police say likely wouldn't face charges if they had stopped, she hopes that person turns themselves in.
"I'm sure he has kids too, I would just ask him to think about if this happened to him and his kids, which I would hope it never would," said Membrano.
Police had been looking for a dark-colored four-door car, and they were reviewing surveillance video from nearby stores earlier this week. But so far, there are no new leads in this case.
