FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Unified officials are comforting the family members of a sixth grade student critically hurt Monday while playing on the blacktop at school. It happened around lunchtime at Turner Elementary School at Clay and Peach avenues in East Central Fresno.

Fresno police and Fresno Unified officials rushed to Turner Elementary Monday afternoon after a frantic 911 call was made after the 12-year-old boy fell on the basketball court while playing with classmates.

"It really was an accident on the playground. There was nothing that could have prevented it from what we can tell at this point," said Amy Idsvoog with Fresno Unified.

Officials say a teacher turned around right after the child fell and tried to offer medical assistance while other staff members called for help. The police presence and ambulance prompted some concerned parents to show up at the school. Teachers say no other students were involved in the accident. But sadly, many classmates witnessed the boy fall and the teacher's rescue attempts.

"Any time you have that many people out on a playground and you see a situation where one of your friends or one of your classmates gets hurt, let alone an ambulance has to come to take care of him and they take him away, absolutely that's going to be a scary sight for both adults and for students, so that's why we have support services here," said Idsvoog.

A telephone message was sent to inform families about what happened. Family members told officials the child has a prior medical condition that could have been a factor in the child's collapse.

The boy is being treated at Valley Children's Hospital. He was transferred there from Community Regional Medical Center. His family is by his side, and he is in very critical condition.
