PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Detectives in Porterville are working to figure out why someone opened fire on a group of people. The shooting sent three people to the hospital.

Wednesday night gunfire erupts into a group of people on Orange Street in Porterville. Police say the group had just left a meeting when someone started shooting. Three people were hit.

Dominic Barteau with the Porterville Police Department said, "Detectives have been working endlessly trying to figure out who and why this occurred."

Porterville police say witnesses saw one or two people running away down an alley, they say one person was carrying a rifle. The shooting has surprised this part of town.

Beck Henry with Beck Foreign Car Service said, "I come out of here at night all the time it's pretty safe neighborhood."

Nick Mosqueda owns the barbershop next door.

Mosqueda said, "You just gotta watch yourself what you do around the neighborhood and how you react to people."

The three victims are expected to be ok. Detectives hope talking with them will help solve the case.

Barteau explained, "So they're looking at who the victims are, who they might have had issues with and they're working on talking with victims and getting information."

Police aren't ruling anything out, but say this looks random.

Detectives are hoping anyone with information will give them a call.
