Hanford PD investigating weekend car burglary spree

HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's not the news anyone wants to start a nice lazy Sunday, but it's the message Lindsey Surratt got from her neighbors-- that her mother's car had been broken into overnight.

"Knowing that somebody was so close and going through your stuff while we were all asleep, that part is unsettling," Surratt said.

Luckily, Lindsey's mother didn't have any valuables inside her car. And Lindsey is amazed that whoever did this went for the car parked in the driveway.

Two others parked on the street were left alone.

"This area is kind of targeted a lot, we get egged. Sometimes if somebody leaves their car open, then they get things stolen. But this was the most extreme that's happened so far."

"(There were) calls from people that their vehicles were broken into, windows smashed, property taken from their vehicles," said Hanford Police Sgt. Stephanie Huddleston.

Hanford police responded to eight homes in the Silver Oaks neighborhood Sunday morning. All had cars broken into and items stolen, including loose change, cell phone chargers, ID's, credit cards, and even a firearm.

Hanford Police says the stolen gun is very concerning.

Vehicle burglaries are a common call for the department, and as always, they're reminding people to lock their cars and make sure the windows are up.

"Never leave anything of value in sight," Huddleston said. "Thieves are out there looking for anything they can sell and make some money off of."

Surratt says residents of Silver Oaks will talk to each other more about any suspicious activity.

So far, no suspects in these cases have been identified.
