Judge agrees to restorative justice for hit and run driver

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- From the heart, and without a script, Doctor William Dominic told the court about an epidemic of hit and run crashes in the Central Valley involving cars and bikes. Thursday he said he hopes to be a voice for those hurt or killed that, unlike him, never get justice.

"Despite my good outcome, there are many others that have not been so lucky."

Dr. Dominic understands that some may feel the punishment is too lenient for the young woman who almost took his life. But he doesn't believe jail time will be as impactful as a lengthy requirement to serve the community and share her story.

"Whether you shoot a gun at someone or run them over with a car, even if there's no intent. It is a very serious offense and I sincerely hope that Miss Sandoval understands that the things we've asked her to accomplish are important and hopefully will change her life."

Through a system called restorative justice, Dr. Dominic met with Brianna Sandoval and a mediator to select a punishment both felt would be fair and appropriate. They agreed the most suitable place for her to serve 400 hours of service is the hospital where he works long hours saving lives.

"Dr. Dominic assisted me and sent me a written form that was sent to Community Hospital. She met with Community Hospital yesterday-- tentatively approved," said Dan Bacon, Brianna's Attorney.

Sandoval did not address the court or Dr. Dominic during sentencing. Although she has no prior criminal past, her plea to hit and run could have landed her in jail for as long as four years. As terms of the agreement, she also made a video blog.

Dr. Dominic has returned to work but the impact of his experience still lingers. He remembers the patients he wasn't able to help because he had to take time off to heal from his own traumatic injuries.

Sandoval will be on probation for three years and lose her license for the next year.
