Killer wore gloves: New details in Clovis double murder
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The killer wore gloves.
Action News has uncovered new details from the Clovis double murder investigation.
The new information could give a boost to the prosecution's case against Dave McCann, but his defense attorney says some of it could help him as well.
Action News dug through documents detailing the police investigation -- from the moment Tierney McCann's sister called 911 to the search of Dave McCann's property after Clovis police took him into custody.
Clovis police took McCann into custody as he wore a blue Carmel By The Sea T-shirt.
Search warrants reveal he also had a big duffel bag when they found him in a Seaside homeless encampment. And inside the bag, they found a sweater and jogging pants with blood on them.
Police believe he may have been wearing those when he killed his wife, Tierney Cooper McCann, and his mother-in-law, Judith Cooper.
But the warrants also shows a witness saw him wearing something police didn't find.
"The fact that you have an eyewitness who saw gloves on the perpetrator -- that's significant because that shows premeditation and deliberation and so that goes a long way," said legal analyst Ralph Torres.
Torres says the gloves may show planning by McCann, which points to first-degree murder. The fact that he skipped town minutes after the murders also points that way.
"That's a potential consciousness of guilt, absolutely," he said. "Lay people look at that and go 'why did you run?'"
Investigators say McCann left one of the women in a common living area and the other in a locked bedroom.
They found surveillance video showing him walking to the house before 4 a.m. from a home where he was staying about a block away. Inside that home, police collected several pieces of evidence, including three of McCann's passports and two phones.
They couldn't track his escape through his phones, but they did get a little of his back story.
Business associates tell Action News they think McCann had developed a drug problem. They say he recently started to act strangely and aggressively.
According to the warrant, Tierney's sister told police a similar story about his behavior. He'd accused Tierney of cheating on him with a pregnant woman, and he'd become hostile.
"It's unusual thinking and that's a symptom of insanity, so we'll see where that goes," said Torres.
McCann's defense attorney tells me he is investigating whether McCann was suffering some sort of decline due to mental illness. He says there was no clear escape plan, and there's still no plan, except to plead not guilty at his next court appearance next week.
