Man charged with DUI, hit and run on Visalia police vehicle

VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man is in custody after hitting a police patrol car in Visalia.

The collision happened Wednesday night just after 9:30 on County Center and Caldwell. An officer says his car was struck from behind by a Ford van. Moments later they say the driver, Jonathan Mates, left the scene but was soon caught. He was arrested for driving under the influence and hit and run.

Neither the suspect or officer were injured. Both vehicles suffered minor to moderate damage.
