FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- One man is dead after getting hit by a car near Cedar and Shields in Central Fresno. The accident happened when a 62-year-old man was crossing the street from the center median and into the path of a car driving northbound on Cedar. Witnesses told police, the man was walking very slow and the driver of the car did not brake prior to hitting the man.

When paramedics arrived, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the car, 57-year-old Edward Grijalva, was suspected of being under the influence of methamphetamine. He was arrested on felony DUI charges after being treated at Community Regional Medical Center for injuries he sustained in the crash.

Police said the pedestrian should not have been in the roadway outside of the crosswalk, but occupied the roadway for a substantial period of time -- so driver is primarily at fault and his intoxicated state could have been a contributing factor.

Part of the road was shut down for hours Thursday tonight for the investigation.
