Man who rescued elderly man from fire talk to ABC News
Michael Alcala of Fresno is one of three men being hailed as a heroes after an intense apartment fire Saturday, talks with ABC News.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Michael Alcala of Fresno is being hailed as a hero after he rescued an elderly man from an intense apartment fire on Saturday. Now he is talking with ABC News.

Video shows Alcala was one of the three men pulling 73-year-old Robert Wells to safety from a burning home at Cedar and Dakota in Central Fresno.

Alcala said he just happened to be driving by when he saw the smoke and stopped. He said he immediately ran to the back of the duplex where he found Wells struggling with his oxygen tank.

"He was just leaning forward trying to get air and we were with him and for us it was so hard because the smoke was so strong. We were carrying him out and that's when we were passing the garage and this explosion - you know - out of nowhere," said Michael Alcala.

"I wasn't going fast enough so a guy picked me up and carried me out there. he was kind of in a half-a run," said Robert Wells, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I made it out."

The identities of the other two rescuers are still a mystery. They left the scene just minutes after saving the man.

An investigation is underway this morning into what sparked the fire.
