Parlier murder suspect accused of beating a jail guard

FRESNO, Calif. -- Joel Valera, who is in custody for allegedly killing Parlier coach Artie Gomez, has been charged with beating a jail guard.

Valara was arrested in March 2014 after authorities say he shot and killed his neighbor, Artie Gomez, over an ongoing trash dispute between the two.

Gomez had six kids, plus two foster kids. But he was best known in the community for shaping kids' lives on the football field, coaching at every age level over the last 20 years.

Joel Varela has a history of crimes in the Valley -- including auto theft, statutory rape, domestic violence and several misdemeanors.
