A woman was being questioned by authorities in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, after her baby daughter was found apparently abandoned on the side of a road, police said today.

After the Anne Arundel County Police Department posted the baby's photo on social media, a woman claiming to be the mother came forward, Lt. T.J. Smith of the Anne Arundel County Police said at a news conference today.

The woman was later verified as the baby's mother, the police department said in an update this afternoon on its Facebook page.

Just before midnight Saturday, officers responded to a report of an abandoned child on the side of a road in Pasadena, Maryland, the police department said on its Facebook page this morning.

Officers found a baby girl in a car seat carrier. Police said the baby is 2 or 3 months old.

"Scuff marks on the carrier and other debris indicate that the carrier may have fell off of a moving vehicle," the police wrote in the post.

The child was taken to a hospital to be treated for dehydration, police said.

The baby was in good condition today, Smith said at the news conference, adding that the baby was in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

The mother met with investigators today, Smith said. Police said today they do not know why the child was left on the road and it is unknown whether foul play was involved.

Police said they do not know whether charges will be filed.

The investigation is ongoing, police said this afternoon. The police department is working with the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office.
