Police: 2 wounded in gang-related shooting in Southeast Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- An investigation is underway after two people were shot in Southeast Fresno Tuesday afternoon.

The double shooting happened near Gearhart Street and Hamilton Avenue around 3 p.m. Fresno police say the two suspects they are looking for are Asian gang members.

Two people were hit by gunfire. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg and hand, and a 30-year-old man was shot in the chest.

Officers say the victims were working on a truck outside their house, when the suspects drove up and asked them what gang they're from. The teenager, according to police, shouted back that he's not a gang member. But the suspects opened fire, shooting both victims.

The two victims were taken to Community Regional Medical Center. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say it's unusual to see Asian gang members causing violence in this part of the city, so there must have been some sort of incident to cause this. Investigators are trying to sort through that, while they talk with the people who saw the shooting.

"There were tons of people out here at the time. In fact, the older victim that was shot, his wife was right there and some of their kids were there. There were people on the street here, standing here and saw the car take off, so saw the shooters faces," said Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Department.

Initially, police said this was a rival gang shooting, which they still think may be the case. They say the 30-year-old victim has a history with the predominant gang in this neighborhood.

The only description police have of the suspect car is a silver sedan -- a Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima -- that was last seen on Belmont Avenue.
