Renewed efforts by Fresno PD has Tower District crime going down

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- New efforts, news results-- for two months Fresno Police have been beefing up their presence to reduce crime in the Tower District. Now they are finally seeing some positive results.

Fresno Police are working around the clock to make the Tower District a more welcoming part of town.

"We've had a 40-percent decrease in robberies, 36-percent in burglaries, and 35-percent in vehicles being broken into. But the major thing is auto theft-- we've had a 64-percent reduction," said Sgt. Robert Gonzales, Fresno Police Department.

Sgt. Gonzales is one of the officers who has been making his presence known. He tells us how they've been able to make such quick and positive progress.

"Our undercover officers doing saturation details on any given day, night, Saturdays, weekends, keeping the suspects always wondering where are the police at."

Something Laura Martinez appreciates. She works at Teazer World Market and Tea. While working there a few months ago, her car was broken into. Martinez said she is less worried about being the victim of a crime like that again-- now that there is a heavier police presence.

"I did notice like more cop cars around and some come in if everything has been good the last couple weeks."

But not everyone is satisfied with the results. The owner of one home, who did not want to be identified, tells us her car was broken into seven times. She said she's even chased a thief away who once hopped her fence in an attempt to break into her home. Frightening encounters that led to selling her house and she said the recent improvements are not enough to make her stay.

"We still have a lot of work to do, it's not nearly over. There's still a lot we can do, hopefully, we can continue this."

Fresno Police said social media, specifically a Facebook page called "Please Stop Crime in the Tower District" has helped them keep track of what's been going on as well. they also said that street cameras have helped as well, allowing officers to monitor what's going on from the Real Time Crime Center at police headquarters.
