FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man is dead and another is in critical condition after they were shot in Northwest Fresno Monday afternoon, the Fresno Police Department said.

The shooting happened outside the AutoZone near Figarden Drive and Santa Fe Avenue around 3 p.m. Police say both men were rushed to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment, where one victim died.

One witness Action News spoke with off camera says she was in her office and heard at least 10 gunshots. After police arrived, she stepped out and shot video of first responders performing CPR on one of the victims.

Minutes later, she captured paramedics placing one of them into an ambulance. Fresno police say the shooting was the result of a confrontation involving several people.

"We have two people shot and transported to area hospitals," Capt. Burke Farrah with the Fresno Police Department said. "We have two people detained, and we believe they were involved in the shooting."

Action News captured those two men being brought out by police, and both were put into handcuffs and placed in separate patrol cars.

Tiago Paim says he was really close with one of the suspects back in middle school, and he saw his old friend while on his way to the gym being taken into custody.

"I was definitely just in shock seeing that it was him getting in the police car," he said. "I did not see that coming at all, especially since we were close friends back in middle school."

Police say as of now, it is going to take some time to unravel exactly what happened. They are hoping surveillance cameras in the area will provide visual evidence for the investigation.
