FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The son of a special agent in charge of the Department of Justice in Fresno pleaded not guilty on Monday to two counts of murder.

Eloy Romero Jr., 25, is accused of killing George Duarte, 40, and Joseph Blunt, 38, back on May 12. The three were inside a car near Reedley when Romero ran off the road and crashed into a tree. Duarte and Blunt died.

The incident was first reported as a car crash but later turned into a criminal investigation when the coroner determined the two men had been shot.

Romero could face the death penalty if convicted.
