Police say a man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Southwest Fresno Monday night.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Police say a man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Southwest Fresno Monday night.

The shooting happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. near Kirk and Grove avenues. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says two officers and a sergeant responded to the area to arrest a 36-year-old man for a violation of a domestic violence restraining order. When police arrived, Dyer says they made contact with the suspect in the backyard of a home.

The chief says the man was armed with a metal fence post and advanced toward the officers. He says that's when one officer fired several rounds from a less-lethal shotgun and then used a Taser.

Dyer says the man kept walking toward police with the post. The sergeant and other officer felt threatened, according to Dyer, and fired several rounds at the suspect.

"At some point the other two officers felt their lives where threatened and fired their department handguns at the individual," said Dyer.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

No officers were injured during the incident.
