FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A woman died after she was stabbed by her estranged boyfriend in Downtown Fresno early Saturday, police said.

The stabbing happened near California and Lily Avenues around 5 a.m. Fresno police said the 22-year-old suspect fled after the incident but was later arrested.

All Troy Hannah could do was stare past the crime scene tape down his street at the home where his neighbor was murdered.

"First time anything like this has happened over here," he said.

Police say the 21-year-old woman was inside her home and alone when her estranged boyfriend showed up. According to authorities, some type of altercation happened between the two of them, and investigators say that is when the man stabbed the young woman several times.

Hannah has daughters and says he can't imagine what the victim's family is going through.

"Somebody hurt one of my daughters, they might as well come get me because whoever hurt her, they're going down too," he said.

Police say after the stabbing, the estranged boyfriend ran more than two miles to this home near Fruit and Hawes in Southwest Fresno were he was found about three hours later.

"But he did have a serious laceration to his neck, self-inflicted, looked like attempted suicide situation," Lt. Joe Gomez with the Fresno Police Department said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Community Regional Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

When he is released, he will be taken to the Fresno County Jail and booked for murder.
