Prosecution rests in Funez murder case

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Testimony continued in the trial of a South Valley teen accused of murdering a man using her car. 18-year-old Chaylin Funez faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted by a Tulare County jury.

Tulare county prosecutors played a recorded jail call during court on Wednesday.

The call was between Funez and her boyfriend on June 7th.

"Did you tell the officers anything, when they uh..." Funez says.

"Um I told them..." her boyfriend responds.

"Just say yes or no, just say yes or no," Funez says.

"Yes."

"Ok."

Funez is charged with murder, accused of intentionally running over Visalia husband and father Eric Fisher on Memorial Day weekend, after Fisher tried to break up a fight between Funez's boyfriend and another man.

Fisher was struck two separate times, and then dragged down West Prospect Avenue.

Doctors tried to save his life, but he died later that night.

Not long after the crash, Funez's brother says he saw his sister and her boyfriend, and he could tell right away that something was wrong.

"You could see her eyes were red and she was crying," Donaldo Funez said. "She was just crying, putting her hands on her face."

The next day, the mother of Funez's boyfriend says she picked up her son and Funez in Ivanhoe, and she too noticed they were upset.

"They were very quiet, like too quiet," said Isabel Cadena.

Thanks to an anonymous tip, Visalia Police quickly tracked down the suspect vehicle, which was damaged and had blood on it.

They then found Funez at the home of her boyfriend's mother, across the street from the original crash site.

The trial will continue on Thursday with closing statements.
