Supermarket shoppers enjoy Veggie Fest in Sanger
Shoppers sampled nutritious and delicious recipes, learned how to shop smart, and got tips on how to cook healthy food on a reasonable budget.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fruits and veggies were on display Sunday outside a Sanger supermarket to tempt people to eat healthier.

State Foods is one of several markets around the area participating in the day's Veggie Fest put on by Champions for Change and the Fresno County Health Department.

The idea is to encourage the community to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Shoppers sampled nutritious and delicious recipes, learned how to shop smart, and got tips on how to cook healthy food on a reasonable budget.

"A lot of people have the misconception that fruits and veggies are very expensive," program coordinator Michelle Alcantara explained. "We're here to educate them on that and learn that it can be very affordable you can buy fruit in season make it cheaper."

State Foods Supermarkets also launched a specialized checkout for healthy living.

The healthy checkout is stocked with healthy food options rather than the typical junk food seen on displays near the checkout stands.

This way, customers who make last-minute impulse buys will make healthy choices.
