FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Children in the Central Valley who used to be the most fragile infants were reunited on Saturday with the staff that helped save them.
Community Regional Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit held its annual reunion picnic. Families who had children at the NICU headed out to the gazebo by Terry's House in Downtown Fresno to meet with some of the doctors and nurses who treated them when they were babies. Some of the infants spent months at the NICU before being able to go home to their families.
"Today means a lot to me because this hospital this staff here gave us life by giving us our baby," said parent Audra Strong.
"What's important about it is to see our little miracles," said Diana Cormier, a clinical nurse specialist at CRMC's NICU. "These babies are born at a variety of ages -- sometimes very early, sometimes they can be full term and yet sick -- so it's important for us to see how they're doing, they're thriving."
Many of the nurses and doctors say the picnic is a great opportunity for them to check on how well their "baby graduates" are doing since they left the NICU.
