FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A first of its kind project here in the Valley will help Caltrans improve safety as they continue work on the Highway 180 expansion in Fresno County.

Caltrans is working with Security Paving Company and Vulcan Materials to build a structure over the highway, equipped with a conveyor belt.

The project enables Caltrans to transport more than 800,000 tons of material over traffic to their job site.

The conveyor belt system will help to alleviate traffic congestion and hazards as Caltrans will no longer need up to 35,000 truckloads to deliver the materials.

The temporary structure is expected to be up for the next several months. Caltrans expects to complete the highway expansion by the fall of 2020.
