Clovis Police officer honored for saving child's life at Dinkey Creek

CLOVIS, Calif. -- Corporal Curtis Shurtliff received a standing ovation and a proclamation at the Clovis City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Back in August, Shurtliff, who was camping with his family at Dinkey Creek, rescued a 5-year old boy named Gabriel who was drowning. The boy wasn't breathing when he was pulled from the water, but after continuous CPR efforts and prayer, Shurtliff finally felt a pulse.

"It's a nice gesture getting recognized. But. I have to tell you... when you come down to the end of it, there was only one person to really recognize, and that was God," said Curtis Shurtliff, Clovis Police Department.

Shurtliff promised little Gabriel that if he survived, he would give him his cowboy hat -- which he later did. The Clovis Rodeo presented Shurtliff with a new hat to help recognize his life saving measures.
