CV Honor Flight giving Valley veterans one last tour of honor

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dozens of veterans from the Central Valley are on the trip of a lifetime in Washington D.C.

The Central Valley Honor Flight is taking veterans on one last tour of honor. Sixty-five veterans who have served as far back as World War II, during the Battle of the Bulge-- are now in our nation's capital Viewing long-standing tributes to their service.

"Honey we love it. We've seen a bunch of stuff-- we're having a great time," said Ed Kellerhals, Army veteran.

Army veteran, and Reedley native, Edward Kellerhals served 22 months in World War II. Decades later he's come face-to-face with a memorial built to honor that time in his life.

"You see things you can't just believe what they've done and how they've recorded it-- it's just beautiful," said Kellerhals.

In addition to the World War II memorial, dozens of veterans spent Tuesday touring Iwo Jima Memorial, the Smithsonian, and the Navy Memorial.

Merced native Myron Brandon is most looking forward to seeing the Korean War Memorial-- the war he served as a combat engineer.

"Hard and dangerous work-- somebody had to do it, though. I went and did my service as well as I could," said Brandon.

While the military men and women of the Honor Flight find the trip very powerful, the bronze star recipient said the outpouring of appreciation from complete strangers is overwhelming.

"The people here are just wonderful young people, come here and shake your hand and thank you for your service-- it's overwhelming. People here are just really great," said Brandon.

The Central Valley Honor Flight returns to Fresno Yosemite International Wednesday.
