Fresno City College honors late college president

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno City College leaders unveiled a new memorial this week honoring the school's former president who passed away.

A granite bench was engraved in honor of Tony Cantu. Cantu died suddenly last year, shocking students and staff.

The beloved president made a positive impact on campus so school administrators wanted to create a visible symbol of his legacy. The bench sits in front of the Humanities Division office, where Cantu spent much of his time.

"The things he did for this college will remain here for years to come," Kathy Bonilla with the college said. "So, it's appropriate that it's here and it's appropriate it's in front of the Humanities Division. And we hope people will look at it and say, 'Who is Tony Cantu?' and someone will be able to tell them all about him."

The bench has a quote from German writer Johann Goethe which students and staff said is reflective of Cantu's views on education.
