FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Families in Fresno are learning to better protect themselves against criminals. Dozens signed up for Saturday's Refuse to be a Victim class at the Police Science Institute.
Police said the city had a lack of crime prevention programs, so they secured a grant for these classes. So far, there have been two four hour long seminars.
The classes are free and teach people not to be careless about their surroundings.
"About half of all the burglaries in Fresno, what people refer to as break-ins, the bad guys aren't breaking in. Half the time they are entering through an open door and window to take what they want and leave," said Ruben Barros, Community Service Officer.
The police department plans on hosting more classes in the future.
Once they are scheduled, they will be posted on the Nextdoor app for people to sign up.
