LEMOORE, Calif. (KFSN) -- West Hills College in Lemoore hosted a large job fair for veterans Thursday.

The fair was called 'Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet,' and it's designed to connect vets with employers, job opportunities, and resources to help with their return to civilian life. Various companies and state organizations had booths inside the college's arena.

The event was sponsored by the state's employment development department, and its director made a point of being in attendance Thursday. He says these job fairs are a way to celebrate veterans when they come home.

"This is one of those areas in the state of California that has a higher level of unemployment than other places," said Patrick Henning. "This gives us a chance to make sure we hit home and get those people fully employed."

"I've gotten several job leads for the part-time positions and I did get myself enrolled in the VA system," said local veteran Gaytha Goins-Melone. "I accomplished what I wanted to do."

There was also a veteran job fair in Bakersfield today, with more than 100 employers and hundreds of attendees.
