McNamara Youth Center in Merced to open January 10th

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- A community center that's been closed for years is now opening up for kids in the North Valley.

The snip of a ribbon marked a new beginning for a former community center in south Merced. It was closed for years until the city reached an agreement with five local groups to re-open it as the McNamara Youth Center.

Symple Equazion founder Kelly Turner said, "Merced like many other counties, we have a high rate of crime, and this center is located, any direction north south east west within one mile there have been drive by shootings and killings. The youth in our community, they need a safe place to go, a safe place to learn, and we are going to be able to afford them that opportunity."

The city made improvements to the building, including new carpet and flooring, blinds, and kitchen cabinets. Volunteers helped paint the interior, and many items, including computers, have been donated. The city will also pay for the utilities and charge just one dollar a year in rent.

"It's what the city can do to help youth programs," said Merced Mayor Stan Thurston. "We don't have a lot of money to do that. There's always a request for more programs, but this seemed to be an efficient, cost effective way for people that know how to deal with youth to have a place to do that."

The coalition of non-profits and community groups will operate the center, which will offer homework help, mentoring programs, and fun activities. Kids will also have access to the recently renovated McNamara Park.

Community members packed the ribbon cutting event, but the center will officially open on January 10th.
