Members of Sikh community joined others in candlelight vigil for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Members of our local Sikh community joined other residents for a candlelight vigil at Fresno City College Saturday night.

It was held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of the holiday on Monday. But organizers also incorporated a discussion of hate crimes.

Family members of Gurcharan Singh Gill were among those in the crowd. He was stabbed to death at a convenience store on Shields Avenue on New Year's Day. His relatives are trying to spread a message of tolerance and understanding-- much like Doctor King. "In the end, it's all about trusting each other and building a better relationship, that's how we can progress. If we have hatred, if we don't help each other, if we don't have a good feeling about each other, we're all going to lose," said Ike Grewal, Sikh Council of Central California.

"Martin Luther King's message was not only for African Americans, his message was for everybody regardless of your ethnicity and religion. His message was universal," said another attendee who wished to not be identified.

The investigation into the attack on Gurcharan Singh Gill is still ongoing.
