Parents attend meeting after gunfire erupts outside high school football game in Selma

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Days after gunfire disrupted a Selma High School football game officers are changing up tactics. They are zeroing in on a troubled neighborhood west of Staley Stadium.

Seconds after gunfire erupted Friday a wild rampage of kids took off running police went off searching. Days later, the panic and fear drove parents to come to a meeting held at Selma High School for answers.

"She was just asking me to come and help her and I felt helpless, it was horrifying," said Yolanda Torrez, parent.

Officers still haven't found the people responsible for firing shots during the game's halftime performance. But at Wednesday night's community meeting, Police Chief Greg Garner assured parents tactics were changing.

"I can tell you we did alter some shifts, we did move some personnel around, we are working with our agency and some agencies allied around us."

Just this week, officers arrested two men near the school for probation violations. They also confiscated weapons, ammunition, and meth from one of the homes.

It's unclear if the suspects are connected to Friday's disturbance.

"It's a wake-up call. A wake-up call that these things can happen anytime, especially at an event like this," said Torrez.

Officers said they were planning on tackling crime on Thompson Avenue anyway. Many neighbors had complained about a rise in crime so they plan on saturating the area for the next several weeks.

"I think we are a tiny bit numb to some of these shootings, which is scary to me. I was just happy he was okay and then I was scared for members of the community," said Roxanne Garrigus-Case, parent.

Some left the meeting still skeptical if the changes will work but relieved that at least now there is a clearer game plan if the unthinkable happens.

"When she's with me I'm going to protect her all that I can, and when she's not I'm going to hope that she's in a safe environment and leave it up to God," said Torrez.

Selma Police will be increasing bike and foot patrol at their next home game. They said more officers will be present at all well-attended events from now on in the city.
